SMART and the Detroit Auto Show Announce Historic Mobility Partnership

January 14, 2026

SMART and the Detroit Auto Show today announced a unique mobility partnership that brings together two different mobility industries. Through this collaboration, SMART will serve as the Mobility Transit Partner of the Detroit Auto Show, an unprecedented role for a regional transit agency at one of the most influential automotive events in the world.

The partnership will elevate SMART’s leadership in modern mobility, increase visibility throughout the show, and reinforce the shared mission of connecting Southeast Michigan residents to jobs, education, health care, entertainment, and opportunity. As part of the partnership, SMART will provide wrapped buses across its three county service area. SMART will also participate in the Mobility Global Forum, where General Manager and CEO Tiffany J. Gunter will join national and regional mobility leaders to discuss the future of transportation.

“For more than 100 years, Detroit has shaped the global story of how people move. Today, SMART is proud to help write the next chapter,” said Tiffany J. Gunter, General Manager and CEO of SMART. “Transit and the automotive industry are not competitors. They rely on each other. Workers who design, engineer, and build vehicles use SMART every day to reach their workplaces. This partnership represents a united approach to mobility that will help accelerate growth and opportunity across Southeast Michigan.”

The Detroit Auto Show attracted 275,000 attendees in 2025, providing a major stage for SMART to demonstrate the role transit plays in supporting economic competitiveness and regional innovation. Through joint visibility efforts, media engagement, and participation in key mobility discussions, the collaboration will highlight how transit strengthens the region’s workforce and supports emerging technologies.

“Detroit has always led by bringing industries together,” said Sam Klemet, Executive Director of the Detroit Auto Show. “Transit and the auto industry aren’t separate conversations here — they’re part of the same mobility ecosystem. Partnering with SMART reinforces that the future of transportation is collaborative, connected, and rooted in Southeast Michigan.”

The partnership complements SMART’s broader modernization efforts and the agency’s work to expand equitable access, upgrade rider amenities, introduce new technology, and support local employers and communities.

“SMART is showing up for the region and for the future,” Gunter said. “We are focused on modern mobility, on collaboration, and on making sure Southeast Michigan is positioned for growth. This partnership is another way we are moving the region forward.”
